Green Efficient Data Storage SystemsEnergy Efficient Data Storage Systems
Disk drives consume a significant amount of the power and consequently place a considerable load on
the cooling resources in large data centers. The type of disk drive and associated packaging play a key
role in minimizing the energy required to store and access data in these environments. Atrato has developed a data storage system that exploits the low power characteristics of 2.5-inch disk drive technology that allows for:
  • Ultra-high-density packaging: 160 disk drives per 3U enclosure
  • Extremely low power consumption: 450 watts idle, 750 watts 100% active
  • Minimal cooling: ~5°C thermal gradient front to back
This novel approach to “green” data storage is unique in the industry and proving to provide the performance, capacity, and packaging density inside a single solution.

Atrato Design=Zero Maintenance Atrato Design for Three Year Zero Maintenance
Many storage RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disks) systems employ data replication or error correction coding to support automatic recovery of data when disk drives fail; but most still require drive maintenance. Given the cost of stocking replacement disk drives and operator monitoring, Atrato Inc. has researched the concept of building spare capacity into a SAID (self-maintaining array of identical disks) for fully automatic fail-in-place recovery requiring no monitoring and minimizing data loss exposure. This article provides an overview of the Atrato system’s unique approach to eliminate drive tending and minimize risk of data loss for a three-year operational lifetime.

Disk Array Actuator Density Disk Array Actuator Density
Since 1990, disk array enclosures have changed very little. This paper compares the benefits and challenges involved with the development of high-density packaging, signaling, and management of hundreds of 2.5-inch small form factor disk drives and makes comparisons to the traditional disk arrays previously mentioned. The resulting analysis details a high-density storage array with much finer tuning, sparing, and I/O granularity, extremely high aggregate bandwidth (on the order of several gigabytes per second), impressive transaction rates (on the order of tens of thousands of random I/O operations per second from the disk media), very low average wait times in disk queues, low average response time, and exceptionally low power consumption.

Atrato Velocity1000 Storage Solution The Atrato Velocity1000 Storage Solution
Consumers obviously want movies to quickly appear in their homes at convenient times. Video On Demand (VOD) has become a staple of the premium television programming service set. In order to deliver to customers’ expectations, VOD must continue to evolve so that it may provide a continuously increasing level of service. The Atrato Velocity1000 (V1000) storage solution provides the scalability required to accommodate even the largest VOD system.
